03/12/10 Weekly Response

Hello classmates in REED 502 still unable to post my video blog update so I am writing again in text after meeting with professor Jenkins we figured out the problem at hand which is my computer so whenever I get free time I will have to purchase an external web cam or use another laptop. Well as far as this assignment goes for this week everything went smoothly due to completing a similar assignment last week. I found the readings to be extremely helpful and was much in-depth with strategies to incorporate in my current classes. I hope to be on the same page as my other classmates as far as what you guys are learning from the text also. I found the way the information in the text was straightforward along with an easy read. I let one of my students read through it today and she found that the highlighted parts in my book was very true and that she could also relate. One of my colleagues who is an student teacher is interested in the book as well and asked to borrow it over the weekend to learn some skills to incorporate in her class as well. Everyone has became drawn to the textbook due to the title which tells a lot about our society and people personal beliefs written in text. This week has been pretty laid back and just getting use to all of my classes along with my very busy work schedule.

  1. I found the reading to be helpful, too. I liked the fact that the strategies are well explained and immediately useful to me. I am glad that you decided to share your copy of the book with other teachers. That was one of the first things that I did, too.

  3. What strategies are useful for your classroom. I know you are a special educator, so using differentiation is extremely important. I was able to find many differentiation of instruction strategies from my section of the reading, but it would be nice to know what a special educator thinks.

  4. I do agree that this was a very interesting book and easy to read. I could appreciate this book as a former student in public schools where I never felt reading was pushed or thinking outside of the book was encouraged. Now as an educator, I push these things despite deadlines and tests. I think that this book put value back into preparing the next generation.

  5. The text was in fact easy to read. I myself have been able to come up with some uses for the techniques when I visit classrooms.

  6. When receiving content literacy instruction in the secondary school(s) we must also take into account other subject areas that affect our understanding of information in a given area, especially in the science field, i.e.where math is an important part of this area of learning. Did you find this point of view in your readings with regards to overlapping content areas affecting literacy instruction in the secondary schoo;s?

  7. It was good that you shared your findings with your co-workers in the education field and that they are seeking more material to use that will help them improve. I really got a lot from the book as well. Literacy is very important and teachers should know and understand that it is their responsibility to insure literacy in the content area as a students' right.
